The Policy Joe Never Bought

Every month, I have an opportunity to work with new clients, and I feel genuinely satisfied knowing they have peace of mind because I’ve helped protect the people they love.

Joe’s Story

Just this morning, I heard from a woman who identified herself as the sister of a man I’d spoken with several years ago.  We’ll call him Joe.

Joe had just had twins and was finalizing his trust.  He and his partner weren’t married and had no plans to be, so they were taking steps to make sure the kids would be protected if something happened to him before they were grown.

Joe and I had several conversations.  He was sharp, comfortable with numbers in a way most of my clients aren’t.  Where I typically guide young families toward straightforward term insurance, Joe wanted to look at universal life with a cash value component.  We worked through option after option, configuration after configuration.

As the process stretched on for months, I suggested he at least put a short, term policy in place in the meantime, something to protect his family while we sorted out the bigger picture.  As far as I know, he never did.  He didn’t buy that term policy, or any policy, from me.  I reached out to Joe periodically after that, but I never heard back.

The other morning, I got the email from his sister:

“Joe” passed away unexpectedly on July 20 from complications of a recent medical procedure. Given that he was only 41 years old and left behind his 4-year-old twins, we have all been in quite a state of shock and scrambling to figure out the state of his estate.

We found your name in the trust that he executed in 2024 and wanted to see how we can learn more about the policy he had in place, as well as what the process is to start making a claim.

There is no policy.  There is no claim.  Just two four-year-olds and a family left to absorb a loss that a modest, inexpensive term policy could have softened.

Writing back to Joe’s sister was one of the saddest emails I’ve ever sent.

If Someone You Know Needs This

If you’re reading this, you already know how it feels to have this kind of protection in place, and I’m sincerely grateful for the trust you’ve placed in me to help you get there.

Here’s what I ask in return: the next time someone in your life a sibling, a friend, a coworker mentions they don’t have life insurance, or that they’ve been meaning to look into it, think of me.  The rates I get are the same ones you’d find comparing quotes on any online platform.  The difference is that you’re not filling out a form and hoping for the best; you’re working with someone who will pick up the phone, understand your specific situation, and make sure you end up with the right coverage instead of no coverage at all.

Joe’s family didn’t get that chance.  Please help make sure the people you care about do.

Thank you for your business, and for the confidence you’ve shown in me.  Together, we can make sure fewer families ever have to hear the kind of news I had to send to Joe’s sister.
